Cordón del Plata, Cradle of mountaineers
Lomas Amarillas is part of a select group of nine peaks that exceed 5,000 meters in the Plata Range, in the Mendoza Frontal Mountain Range. At 5,159 meters, it is the sixth highest peak in the range.
It is built by a high ridge running east-west that defines two large slopes: the steep south face, with rock and snow walls; and the extensive north face, dominated by long scree slopes and some snow channels that persist well into summer. To the west, it is connected to the Plata River via the famous Plata-Lomas Amarillas Pass (4,924 meters), the first milestone on a summit day of the highest peak in the range. To the east, the ridge descends to Franke Peak (4,829 meters), a secondary peak of Lomas Amarillas.
